New Mosquito Species Found in England – Health Threat

Mosquitos are more than just annoying pests, they are carriers of many different types of diseases and illnesses. Every year around 700 million people get ill due to a mosquito bite. It is important for people to take measures to protect themselves from getting bitten by a mosquito.

A warning in the UK has been issued about mosquito species reaching the UK, who are responsible to spread Zika Virus and other viruses as below – the heatwave in Europe can mean we can see this more often than not.

Malaria

This is a serious condition that a person can contract from a mosquito. It can even be fatal. People that contract malaria often have dangerously high fevers, chills that lead to the shakes, and flu like symptoms. Malaria is common in African nations but every year over 1,000 people in the United States get malaria through a mosquito bite. If a person has malaria they need to see a healthcare professional immediately. They can be treated with medications such as Aralen, Oracea, and quinine, among other medications as prescribed by a doctor. Prevention is best. If a person is going to an area where infection rates are high or cases have been reported a person should use bug spray and wear long pants and sleeves to keep mosquitos from infecting them.

Zika Vrius

This is another illness that is spread by a mosquito bite. The symptoms will vary. Some people may have mild symptoms while others may have a severe reaction. Symptoms include a fever, rash, headache, achy joints, and conjunctivitis also known as pink eye. There is an addition risk to a pregnant woman as this virus may affect the fetus. These symptoms can last anywhere between a couple of days and a couple of weeks. While death is possible, it is rare.

West Nile Virus

This is another virus that is transmitted from infected mosquitos. When a person is infected they may not develop symptoms right away. When a person does develop symptoms they can include a high fever, weakness, fatigue, body pains, vomiting, and diarrhea . These symptoms can last for several months. Symptoms are often worse in people over the age of 60 or those with a weakened immune system.

Chikungunya

This illness that is spread by a mosquito can cripple a person. Other reactions include a rash, nausea, and fatigue. A patient may be able to recover but they can have joint pain for several years.

The best way to avoid these mosquito transmitted illnesses are with prevention. A person should get all possible vaccinations. They should also use mosquito netting while outdoors. If a person is in a high-risk area they can use bug spray with DEET. While mosquito viruses are no common in the United States outbreaks still happen and a person needs to be aware of the different illnesses they can get from a mosquito.
